Opening Reception 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb.29

On the eve of the 2008 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, the exhibition Iditarod Visionary: Joe Redington Sr. will open at the Anchorage Museum. The show honors Redington’s pioneering vision for the Last Great Race, and includes dog sleds, gear, awards, video, photographs and memorabilia that trace more than 30 years of Iditarod history.

Iditarod Visionary celebrates Redington’s spirit of adventure. Whether raising a family with Violet at the Knik Homestead, driving a dog team to the summit of Denali, performing military salvage operations by dog team, or turning a dream into the reality of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, this show highlights the extraordinary life of Joe Redington Sr., known as the ‘Father of the Iditarod.’

This exhibition is the first presentation of the Redington Family Collection, which was generously donated to the museum by the sons of Vi and Joe Redington Sr., Joe Jr. (Joee), Ray Sr. and Tim. The museum is also grateful to Jeff Schultz, many of whose photos are included in the exhibition. Cataloguing of the collection was supported by a generous grant from the Rasmuson Foundation.

The opening reception will take place on Friday, February 29, 2008 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center. Free and open to the public.
