For the front of the pack as mushers spent the last 24 hours weaving through a trail that has been extremely forgiving through the Alaska Range. Now is the time for many at the front of the pack to begin making decisions about where they will take their 24 hour layover. How many will move on through McGrath, Takotna, Ophir and find rest in Iditarod? How many will find rest before that monumental halfway mark? These are the questions that will be answered over the next 24 hours.
What’s Happening at The Back of the Pack
Early this morning, Iditarod musher Bill Hinkel made the decision to scratch in Finger Lake. In Rainy Pass, the last musher to leave Puntilla Lake and move on up the trail was Nancy Yoshida. According to reports on the trail, Nancy broke one of her runners trying to navigate the infamous Steps.
The Race Behind the Race
Iditarod Trailbreakers say they’re up for the challenge that lies ahead. As snow continues to fall, Trailbreakers are trying to break new trail in order to make sure the mushers behind them have a trail to run on. Check out the latest video clip from the Trailbreakers on Iditarod Insider earlier in McGrath. Right now the snow’s falling, and yes, it is decision time!
