Mentor on the Trail

Our goal is to partner with teachers to provide the most compelling drug education program possible. All of our “Mentors have been trained in the art of “facilitation” and “experiential education”. Utilizing the nationally accredited curriculum “Stay on Track” we create a powerful learning environment. Our goal is to set youth up for success by teaching them “risk assessment” and empowering them to make smart choices so their life dreams and goals will be achieved.

Drug Demand Reduction Mission Statement

logo_anglarge1.gifThe Alaska National Guard actively supports drug prevention efforts through education and support to community based organizations, schools, and the community at large.  The Drug Demand Reduction (DDR) Program provides assistance to federal, state and local law enforcement agencies to help educate the public of all ages, on the dangers of drug and alcohol use and abuse.  DDR provides education, awareness programs, and resources directed at the prevention of substance abuse in Alaska.  DDR efforts focus on making good choices, and the benefits of living a healthy and Drug-Free life-style.  All programs are at no cost to your organization.

Current Programs

Story Time with the Guard

This story time with an Alaska National Guard member will take approximately 15 to 20 minutes. A popular story book appropriate to the age group will be read from a projector slide show and the kids will be asked to participate by answering questions about topics such as peer pressure, safety, and staying healthy. Great for kindergarten and 1st grade alike.

Fatal Vision

A presentation that directly shows the effects of alcohol and a person’s inability to do even the simplest tasks.  Seminar includes a conversation between presenters and students about drugs and alcohol. Fatal Vision Goggles are a great resource in showing young adults the effects of alcohol. Simple FST’s (Field Sobriety Tests), simple games and normal everyday tasks are conducted by the students.  They find that the simulated impairment of alcohol makes these tasks seemingly impossible to carry out. Great for Junior and Senior High Schools!!  NOTE:  This program is included in an “Inside Dope” presentation and does not stand alone.

Inside Dope

This presentation is our most popular message and focuses on club drugs, designer drugs, inhalants and gateway drugs and their connection to local communities. This presentation can be held in a single classroom or in a large assembly type setting. National Guard members discuss the negative impact of substance abuse on the students, their families, and on society, the bodies reaction to the drugs and the health effects (both long and short term) the drugs cause. The use of props such as, pig lungs, chewing tobacco stained teeth, and a drug identification kit makes this presentation extremely informative and great for all age groups.

Inside Dope “Peer to Peer”

The Alaska National Guard provides training and oversight to JROTC students in order for them to provide Anti-Drug presentations to middle school students from “feeder schools”.  The feeder schools get to hear an anti-drug message from other students that they may know from their own school area and the JROTC students get valuable experience in a public speaking venue to assist them in their educational development as future leaders.
