*  Please remember that the miles from checkpoint to checkpoint are an estimate.  The distance may also change slightly from year to year depending on the trail.  Each year, the trail is created and although it remains for the most part the same, conditions may change the route a few miles one direction or another.  You may find conflicting information about the length of the Iditarod Trail.

Sometimes ‘we’ say The Last Great Race® is 1,049 miles.  Great= something larger, for example, more than 1000 miles.  49 to represent Alaska being the 49th state.
