Hello Boys and Girls,
It is hard to believe that the 2008 Iditarod race will soon begin. The race always begins on the first Saturday in March and it ends when the last musher reaches Nome. This year, the race starts on March 1. The restart is the following day, March 2. As you might guess, it is getting very busy at Iditarod Headquarters. The Iditarod staff and many volunteers are working on every detail so this will be the best race ever!
The mushers are very busy, too. They are making their strategy, (a plan or guide to how the musher has decided to run the race) organizing their supplies that will be sent out on the trail to checkpoints, planning what to pack in their sled, making sure their winter gear will keep them warm, repairing equipment, buying supplies, training their team, and some mushers are even entering sled dog races.
There are many races going on in Alaska and other parts of the world. Some of these races are called ‘qualifiers’ for Iditarod. In mushing, a qualifier is a racing event that counts towards a musher’s eligibility to be able to run in Iditarod. Rookie mushers must qualify for Iditarod. If the rookie doesn’t complete the qualifiers, the rookie can not race in Iditarod. Veterans don’t have to qualify because they have already finished the race in a previous year. (A year before this year, previous.)
If you have picked a favorite musher to follow this year, you might want to read about the other races that are going on and see if your musher has been racing. You can read more about other races by visiting our links. To get back to the Iditarod website from my article, click on the ‘I DOG’ logo that is at the top right of this page. Then click the tab, Learn About. From the menu items, choose the word—Other Links. I know you will find many interesting races and lots of information to read about at our links section. Just don’t forget to come back and read more of Zuma’s Paw Prints when you are done!
I am certain, Boys and Girls, you are thinking of lots of questions that you would like to ask. I hope you use the comment section to ask or give us your thoughts. With my busy schedule at school and the articles and interviews I will be working on for the race, the fastest way for you to get answers will be by leaving comments for the other K-9 reporters and for me. Leave a comment and then check back the next day to see your answer from us.
Don’t forget to click on the comments section of the articles so you can read what other boys and girls have said or asked. Doing that is a great way for you to learn more about the race. I am really happy about all of the great comments that have been left for us already. Every comment and every answer helps everyone enjoy the Last Great Race, Iditarod.
What are you waiting for? Get reading!
Lots of Tail Wags,
Zuma

Dear Zuma,
Are you excited for the race? I know I can’t wait because we are doing a whole bunch of Iditarod activities this year. One thing in our classroom we are going to make is a sled team with popsicle sticks for a sled, and rocks for the dogs. Do you have a favorite this year.

Down where we live it is only cold in winter. I am from West Virginia. Do you have a favorite this year? We are watching the race at school. Well I hope you write back to me.
Bye Zuma!
Your New Friend,
Alexis.
Hello Taylor and Alexis!
Making sleds out of craft sticks is a lot of fun. Have you teacher send me some pictures of your finished sleds. It will be fun to see them.
I am not cold in Alaska because I wear a warm fur coat 24 hours a day. I am very excited about the race, not just now, but all year long! I have lots of favorite teams, more than a 100 favorite teams!

Hi Zuma!
I’m very exited for the Iditarod because we are doing a Homeschool Unit Study on it! We’re going to make dog sleds out of popsicle sticks and dogs out of rocks! We are also going to write a journal through the eyes of the dog or musher. I am homeschooled and in 3rd grade.

Hi, Zuma! I am also excited about Iditarod season really heating up now. I have been reading about the mushers entering and finishing the other races being held. I have several teams that I am watching this year. First, I’m rooting for Rachael Scdoris because I am also blind like she is. Next, I’m rooting for Lance Mackey. I also keep my eye on Jeff King, Doug Swingley, and Martin Buser. This year I will have to watch for Rohn Buser as well. I have an Insider account this year, so I am very excited about following the start and re-start live!
I also teach art to the blind students at the SC School for the Deaf and the Blind. We wre going to do Iditarod activities during the first week of the race. I’m also going ot make a huge map of the trail with all the checkpoints labeled in Braille so the kids can follow the mushers as they progress through the race. I think we might make a special marker for Rachael so we can keep up with where she is. She is a positive role model for all of us!

Hi Zuma,
We are reading the story Stone Fox and also following the Iditarod race this year. We would like to know how old you are and when your birthday is. How old do dogs need to be to compete in the iditarod? What is the oldest dog that has been in the race? Are there a certain number of dogs you need to pull the sled? We hope to hear back from you and stay warm in Alaska.
Mr. Schutz’s Class
Alden, NY
Hello Mr. Schutz’s Class,
Thanks for the comments. You have some great questions…
First, I’m working on my bio and when it is done, it will be posted so everyone can read about my family history. Right now, if you click on the story Who Am I? Zuma, you can read some information about me.
Second, one of our K-9 reporters, Libby, is working on an article about the Iditarod dogs and their ages, so watch for that article. I don’t know how old the oldest dog has been, but I will try to find that out.
Thanks for posting!
Lots of Tail Wags,
Zuma
Dear Zuma,
I know that you know my teachers,Mrs.Walsh and Mr.Colombo because they told my class today. Do you like to watch the races and how many have you seen? I can’t wait to see the race.
Dear Students,
It is great to hear from you. Thanks for the email. I do like to watch the races. I’ve seen them every year of my life.
Lots of Tail Wags,
Zuma
Dear Boys and Girls from New York,
Thanks for the questions. I answered most of them and gave you hints about where to find answers for other questions. I hope you take time to read all the articles and learn more about the race during your activities and lessons about the race. I have a feeling that your teacher has planned some great lessons. Study hard, read lots of books and articles, and do your best in school.
Lots of Tail Wags,

Dear Zuma,
How many rest areas are there? What is the most popular color of dog? Joshua

Hi Zuma!
What do iditarod dogs eat? What do people eat? What time does the race start?
Brooke
Dear Brooke,
Iditarod dogs eat nutritious food—whatever the musher has decided is the diet for that musher’s team. Meats and fish are part of the diet.
Lots of Tail Wags,
Zuma

Dear Taylor,
We’ll know how many mushers are in the race when it starts on March 1. The finish line is in Nome and there are lots of dog prints under the finish line AFTER all the dogs have finished the race because the dogs leave their paw prints.
Lots of Tail Wags,
Zuma

Lots of Tail Wags, Megan
Hello, Megan! No I am not part wolf. Thanks for the post. Lots of Tail Wags, Zuma
Dear Zuma,
My name is jordan. How many coats do the
mushers have to wear? My reading group is
studying the Iditarod this week. And we
are going to make maps of the 2008 Iditarod
trail.
Your friend Jordan
Dear Jordan,
Great question. What you need to know is that it isn’t how many coats you wear that keep you warm, it is the kind of coat that you wear and what you wear under neath the coat. So the answer to that depends on the insulation layers a musher wears. This would be a good discussion for your class. Decide what you think ‘insulation’ layers might be. Look in a Cabela’s on line catalog to see what you can learn about winter clothing. What kind of material/cloth are most extreme weather clothing made of and what can you learn about clothing necessary to keep a musher— or anyone else who is out in very cold temperatures– warm and safe? You should make a poster about what you learn. Watch for future articles at Zuma’s Paw Prints to help you learn more.
Lots of Tail Wags,
Zuma
Hi,my name is Allie. My reading group is learning about the iditarod.
Your Friend, Allie
HI zuma you are the coolest dog ever!!!!!!!!! Is it kinda scary out on the trail?
Your Friend. Bryce
Hi Zuma my is Alexcia I want to ask you.Do dogs die in the race?
Your Friend,
Alexcia
Hello Allie, Alexcia, and Bryce. Thanks for your comments. Most mushers know the trail and have studied about it so they are aware of what they will face. That keeps everyone safer. Alexcia, sad things can happen on the trail that make us all very sad, but every single dog that is in the race has been trained to race and has had a medical check up from the vet. Everyone wants healthy dogs at the finish line and all points in between. That is why there are vets at every checkpoint. The vets are always talking to the musher about the dogs and checking over the team to make sure the dogs are all healthy.
Lots of Tail Wags,
Zuma

dear zuma,
when you were a kid were you in the jr.
iditarod? are you in the iditarod this year?
your friend,
Isaac
Hello Isaac,
No, I was not in any Iditarod or any race. I’ve gone on fun runs with my fur friends, but I don’t pull a sled. I am a K-9 reporter.
Lots of Tail Wags,
Zuma
Hi Zuma my reading group is studying the
Iditarod. I want to know how many booties
the dogs need?
your freind chase
Dear Chase,
The dogs need one bootie for each foot! AND they need enough booties to last them the entire race. Mushers send extra booties to checkpoints and they carry booties in their sled during the race. An estimation would be that mushers need about 1500 booties for the race, maybe as many as 2000. Think about what would make mushers need more or less booties.
Lots of Tail Wags,
Zuma
Dear Zuma,
How many dogs are able to pull a sled?
your friend simon
Dear Simon,
Well, any number of dogs can pull a sled… do you mean during the race? Mushers must finish the race with at least 6 dogs pulling the sled. When they leave the restart, they can have 16 dogs. Lots of Tail Wags,
Zuma
dear zuma,
when was the first iditarod?
who won the first iditarod?
who lost the first iditarod?
your friend
kinzie.
Dear Kinzie,
The first true Iditarod was in 1973 and the winner was: Dick Wilmarth. There were 22 mushers in that race, so 21 mushers finished after the official winner. You can read more about the history of the race at the Learn About section of the website.
Lots of Tail Wags,
Zuma
Dear Zuma,
My reading group is studying the iditarod and I just had a few questions for you.First,I was wondering how old does a dog have to be to get in the iditarod? second of all,who won the first iditarod and who was the last musher to find his/her way out of the wilderness?Last how many check points are in the iditarod?
your friend,
Grace
Dear Grace,
The age of the dogs depends on how much training the dogs have, so it isn’t really about age, it is about being healthy and trained to pull the sled and race. Dick Wilmarth won the first iditarod and John Schultz was the last musher to arrive. The number of checkpoints is different for the northern route and the southern route. You can look at the trail map found at the Learn About tab of the site and read the names of the checkpoints.
Lots of Tail Wags,
Zuma
Hi Zuma! how long is the juinior Iditarod I REALLY WANT TO KNOW!!!!!!!! Luke
Dear Luke,
The Jr. Iditarod is about 160 miles. You can read all about the Jr. Iditarod by clicking that link on the front page of http://www.iditarod.com.
Lots of Tail Wags,
Zuma
That is cute and informative. Lee
Hi zuma! If someone flips over do they have to contact the check-point? Cooper
Dear Cooper,
No, you don’t have to tell any one when your sled tips over.
Lots of Tail Wags,
Zuma
dear zuma,
Ive alredy typed to you the one about the how many coats do the mushers half to wear. At each
check point do the mushers half to get new sleads or get them checked?
your friend Jordan
Hello Jordan,
No, the mushers don’t have sleds waiting for them at each checkpoint. They do check their own sleds and fix them if they need mending. The mushers are allowed to have another sled waiting for them at a checkpoint. You can read a the FOR MUSHERS tab of the website, other rules that the mushes have to follow.
Lots of Tail Wags, Zuma
do u really type back the comments

Dear Jesse,
I guess you’ll have to see if I type back or not! (hee hee!) Lots of Tail Wags, Zuma

Hey Zuma,
does your keyboard really type? are you excited for the race?how can we send you a pizza?Do you call a pizza a pizza like we do? Hannah
Hello Hannah,
Yes, the keyboard works. I am excited about the race. Hannah, please tell you class that although I used to like to eat pizza, I would rather you not send a pizza to me this year. I would much rather that the class spend the money that you’d spend on a pizza for a special project in your own community. You could donate the money to an animal shelter. You could buy a book and send it to the hospital so it can be shared with ill children. Or you class can think of lots of good projects to help your community be a better place. Then after you do the project, you can post a message to me telling what you did. I would REALLY be happy if you would do something like this. Please tell your teacher about this idea. Thanks, Hannah. Lots of Tail Wags, Zuma
dear zuma,
you are the coolest dog ever!Do the dogs get tired of the harneses and at each check point they half to take them off?
your friend Jordan

p.s. im 10 and in newport beach california
Zuma you rock,I love you! Your website is so cool, I read lots of it. How is the weather down there in Alaska? It rained a lot in Michigan, and we lost most of our snow, but we are getting it back,we are going to get six inches. I want it to be spring,or summer, really bad. That is what I like it about Michigan, because we get all the seasons,Winter,Spring,Summer, and Fall. Anyway,I got to go.
Love,Grace
Dear Zuma,
How long does the Iditarod Race usually last? Also, who do you usually run for? I am sometimes confused about Military time too!
Hugs,
Emma
From Illinois
Hello Emma,
Don’t worry about being confused about military time, it takes practice to know and understand it! The race ends when the last musher finishes the race. The number of days can be different each year. You should make a guess as to when the race is over.
Lots of Tail Wags,
Zuma
Hi Zuma my name is Alex I want to ask you something. What does the Artict fox eat?
Hello Alex,
Let’s do some research on the Arctic fox and see who can find out what they eat first!
Lots of Tail Wags,
Zuma
Dear Zuma,Why is Wayne Curtis going farther back every time i look he is always 5 spaces back? My brother chose him . My girl Sigrid ekran is in 5 place she is doing really doing good compared to last year’s race.
Zuma my class is learning about the iditarod and we all picked a person in the race to watch over them and see what place their in. I picked Sigrid Ekran so far she’s in 5 place while my brothers is in 55 place. Is therre a problem with Wayne Curtis ? Please tell me my brother is worried that he might scratch. Annelisea
Hello,
It is really hard to tell who is in the lead because lots of mushers pass each other on the trail. Dogs run and rest, run and rest, and run and rest. Dogs that are running pass dogs that are resting. After mushers start taking 24 hour lay overs, you can start to tell who the leaders are.
Lots of Tail Wags,
Zuma
Hello Zuma, how are you doing? The Iditarod is going really good,do you agree? What is the wether down there in Alaska? Love ya. Grace
I’m doing great. You can check the weather on the front page of the website. Then you can always know about our weather.

Hello, Megan. Thanks for your comment and your question. No, I don’t have any wolf-relatives, at least not in my recent fur-tree.
Lots of Tail Wags,
Zuma
I LOVE YOU ZUMA
