Saturday is Start Day!

libby-4.jpg Libby Here!

Oh, can you believe it?  The race is only a few short hours from starting!  Gypsy, Sanka, Zuma, and I have been thinking of great ideas to write stories about! I hope you check Zuma’s Paw Prints every day and read, read, read.

The race start is tomorrow. The race start is a time of celebration.  Musher’s will carry Idita-Riders in their sleds.  Idita-Riders have won bids to ride an 11 mile run.  People will line the streets of Anchorage and cheer on the mushers, Idita-Riders,  and sled dogs.

The restart is on Sunday.  The clock starts on Sunday when the mushers leave from Willow and head to Nome!

Just spinning some ‘Details’!

Libby

  4. Greetings to you from the North Star State of Minnesota! I love to watch the race through this website and someday hope to observe it in person. Today I’m wearing my Zuma cap and Alaska Hawaiian shirt in honor of the Last Great Race. In 2004, I was honored to meet Zuma at HQ during our Alaska vacation. Until next time……Hike!!!

  11. Have you ever raced in the Iditarod and if so, how many times? If you haven’t raced before, would you like to someday?

My students in Iowa are very excited about the Iditarod and we are tracking our mushers everyday!
Hi, None of the K9 reporters are on Iditarod teams and have not raced in the Iditarod. Our job is reporting on the race. I think we all dream of running the race even if it isn’t likely to happen. Have fun following the race. Gypsy

  12. My class would like to know, where do the mushers sleep on the trail?
Are there any other dogs besides Huskys in the race?
Hi, When the mushers are at checkpoints, there is usually a place set up for them to sleep. It could be a tent, a cabin, a room in a church, school, or community building. Out on the trail, the mushers have sleeping bags and can sleep on the snow, in their sleds, or curled up with the dogs.
Most dogs in the race are known as Alaskan Huskies. There are a couple of teams of purebred Siberian Huskies also.
    Have fun following the race.

  17. Hi Libby! Our class has a couple of questions for you:

    1. Do the teams ever see wild animals during the race? What kind?

    2. Do the teams stop to eat on the trail or do they wait until they get to a checkpoint?

    Thanks!

Hi Mrs. Boisvert’s Class, The teams do occassionally see wild animals on the trail during the race. Some of the animals they may see are moose, bear, and wolves. Teams can stop and eat whenever and wherever they need to. Some checkpoints are too far from each other to wait to eat. Have fun following the race. Gypsy

    your friend jocelyn,
Hi Jocelyn, There are 4 K9 reporters- Zuma, Sanka, Libby, and Gypsy. We do a lot of studying and research to get the information to answer all the questions we get. Sometimes we get the news ourselves and sometimes the news comes to us. Thanks for writing. Gypsy

  30. Hello,
You’ve come to the right website to get answers about Iditarod. A musher can start the race with 16 dogs. Mushers and their handlers train the dogs for the race. Dogs are trained where a musher lives for the most part. Most training is done in Alaska or Canada or other states where the weather and conditions are right for training. Each musher develops a feeding schedule and the kinds of foods that are best for the dogs diet. The dogs are athletes and what the eat is important because a musher needs healthy dogs. Go to the Learn About tab and read articles at the Veterinary Center for more information.
