Today’s question is – Where on the highway is John Stewart? John has been in Montana since fall training and racing the team of Doug Swingley dogs that he’ll be running to Nome. The dog truck filled with supplies along with a couple dozen dogs, Colin – their handler and John have departed from Montana and are on their way via the AL-CAN Highway to Alaska and the start of Iditarod XXXVIII. It’s a very long distance and it’s anything but “direct.” John’s father, Alan, will be flying over from Scotland to meet them in Calgary, joining the team as a handler.

You could have some fun with John’s journey by being a Map Quest Agent. Create a route; calculate distance and estimate time from Montana to Wasilla, Alaska. Keep in mind that most of the travelers are canine so their trip won’t be at a human pace. They’ll have to stop at least every 4 hours to “drop” the dogs and they’ll have to feed the dogs and the dogs will need to be exercised. Get a map and go to work. Handler is going to ask John, Colin and Alan about the trip, shipping supplies, preparing food and drop bags and all that important stuff. As soon as she gets that information, I’ll pass it on. Stay tuned.

John Stewart photo by Jeff Schultz

Back at home in Scotland, John’s family maintains their kennel and “sleddog centre” at the foot of the remote Cairngorm Mountains which is considered to be the last wilderness of the United Kingdom. The centre includes Europe’s only Sleddog museum. The museum covers modern events; Iditarod’s Last Great Race and has a section that’s dedicated to the “King of Dog Team Drivers,” Scotty Allan. The centre is located a short distance from Scotty’s birthplace and childhood stomping grounds.

We’ve been in contact with the Stewart family via Internet and asked what role the legendary Scotty has played in John’s mushing career. John has known about Scotty from a very early age. He has often visited the blacksmith forge, now a ruin, where Scotty was brought up. Alan says that Scotty’s whole way of life has influenced John. He’s been brought up with Scotty’s history all around him – he knows all about his life and what type of dog person he must have been and now John’s goal is to reach Scotty’s Alaskan residence, Nome. Heroes plant the seed from which dreams grow and play an important role, inspiring people to achieve their dreams. Now this is really cool – Scotty’s oldest living relative, Lewis Allan has written to John, personally wishing him well and Godspeed on his journey to Nome. Mushers often bring items of inspiration or personal significance along on the trail. Perhaps John will carry this very special letter to Nome.

Check these websites to learn more about John Stewart – www.iditarod.com, www.sled-dogs.co.uk, and www.johnfortheiditarod.com. Stay tuned for more stories about John and his journey to Nome.

Hi Boys and Girls,

Did you know that there is a special program for teachers called the Target® Teacher on the Trail Program™? This program offers teachers a unique opportunity for a once in a lifetime adventure. One teacher is selected every year to spend 3 ½ weeks in Alaska doing presentations, visiting schools, and flying in a small plane up and down the Iditarod trail following the teams from Anchorage to Nome. During the time these teachers are the Target® Iditarod Teacher on the Trail™ they prepare lessons and they report from the trail. I bet your teachers use some of the lessons developed by the Teacher on the Trail.™

.

So, how does a teacher become a Target® Iditarod Teacher on the Trail™? There is an application they have to fill out. I looked over the application and it’s the biggest homework assignment I’ve ever seen! Some teachers say that it takes months to put together all the information needed to complete the application. All the applications are due by Dec. 1 of each year. Once all the applications are received, the selection committee goes over each one and together they decide on 3 finalists. Those finalists then go to Alaska the week before the start of the race. They do a presentation at the Iditarod Teachers Workshop, have an interview with the selection committee, complete an assignment/project, go to the banquet and to the start and restart of the race. They get to meet many of the mushers and give lots of ear scratches and belly rubs to the canine athletes. When the race is over, the selection committee will select the next

Target® Iditarod Teacher on the Trail™ from the 3 finalists. What a wonderful experience for these 3 teachers.

I was very lucky to do email interviews with all 3 of this years finalists. They sound like very special teachers. Here is a little about each of the finalists:

Martha Dobson

Martha has lived in North Carolina all her life. She currently teaches 6th grade Language Arts. She says nothing has sparked her interest in the classroom like the Iditarod has. She first went to the Iditarod start in 2005. She was an idita-rider with musher Phil Morgan. She never dreamed she’d be bitten by the Iditarod “bug” but she was. She has returned to the Iditarod start every year since then. When asked about using the Iditarod in her classroom, Martha said, “It is amazing to me that teaching brought Iditarod and me together. I want to bring a new experience to my students and to students all over the country, and to make connections between learning and life experiences while they learn the skills taught in their schools. Experiencing the challenges and teamwork of the race firsthand will help me bring this valid teaching tool to the classroom”.

Martha is married and has 3 children. She also shares her home with a Siberian Husky, many cats and a horse.

Blynne Froke
Blynne lives in Northern California. She has been teaching for 22 years and is currently a High School teacher for at-risk students. She’s been teaching the Iditarod in her classroom for the past 3 years. She focuses her lessons on goal-setting, problem-solving, teamwork and leadership skills. She and her students explore all aspects of the Iditarod from race strategies, weather prediction, and musher experiences. Blynne says, “ They like me sit on the edge of their seats awaiting the next step of this amazing adventure.
Blynnes hobbies (other than the Iditarod) are knitting, reading, writing and running trails with her dog. She has completed two half marathons and is currently training for her third. Blynne is married with 2 children. She sure sounds like one busy woman.

Sally Simon
Sally is from New York. She teaches 6th grade enrichment and advanced math in Hendrick Hudson Schools about an hour north of New York City. She became interested in the

Target® Iditarod Teacher on the Trail™ program 3 years ago when Hugh Neff (musher) came to her school and told her about the program. Sally then attended the Winter Educators Conference where she learned so much and became addicted to the race. She knew she had to apply and try to this special position.
Sally says she’s always had goals in her life and “they’re what makes us grow as people”. She says her goals have changed as she grows older. When she was young her goals were school based. Then they were family based. Now she’s beginning to make goals that are based on working with a team. Her goal now is still to be the best she can but to be a team player. She also bases her Iditarod lessons on a TEAMWORK acronym she developed. Each letter is part of a process that can be used to accomplish goals and solve problems as a team. It is: T=Target a goal, E=Evaluate skills, A=assign roles, M=make a plan, W=work together, O=Observe results, R=Reevaluate, and K=Keep at it.
Sally is married and has 2 sons, and 3 dogs. She participates in an unusual sport called fencing (epee). Do you know what fencing is? She also loves to travel and learn new things on her computer.

I think it would be so much fun to be in one of their classrooms? Do you know of a special teacher that would make a good Target® Iditarod Teacher on the Trail™? If so, please encourage him/her to apply. Maybe next year, I’ll be writing about your teacher.

See you out on the trail,
Gypsy

John Stewart, 23 years of age from Scotland, will be running to Nome as a rookie in Iditarod XXXVIII. Having grown up in Scotland, very near to where the king of dog team drivers, Scotty Allan lived, John is thrilled to have the opportunity to travel the trails that made his hero, Scotty, famous. To learn more about the legendary Scotty Allan and his famous lead dog, Baldy, read my previous stories – Scotland to Nome, Scotty Allan and Baldy of Nome – Hero.

John Stewart meets Mark Nordman in Argentina

Since the age of six, John has been around sled dogs. He started out by going on training trips and overnight camping adventures with his father, Alan. At the age of 10, John accompanied his father to remote mountainous Argentina where he helped during races by handling dogs. Now here’s where coincidence takes over. John and Alan met a fellow in Argentina by the name of Mark Nordman. Nordman is the Iditarod Trail Boss. From that moment on, it was young John’s dream to run the Iditarod! So how did John make it to the threshold of accomplishing this great dream?

When he finished school, he lived in Alaska and trained with Egil Ellis. He’s also worked/trained and raced with current Yukon Quest champion Hans Gatt. For the past couple of years, he’s been training and racing dogs out of four-time Iditarod Champion, Doug Swingley’s Montana Kennel. With a great team of Swingley dogs in front of the sled, John has already done well in Montana races this season.

John’s father, Alan took him to the USA, Argentina, Chili and other European countries as a handler for the race team because he was good with dogs, not because John was his son. So to speak, John earned his position as a dog handler because of his talents, not just by inheritance. Now Alan says that John has far more experience with racing than he has and he’s thrilled to switch roles and be a handler for John’s racing activities.

Now that you’ve had a chance to learn a little about Iditarod rookie, John Stewart, I hope you’ll be watching him and cheering him on as he heads to Nome. Handler leaves for the race in just a couple of days. She’ll get to actually meet John and his father. Stay tuned, as I’ll be sharing more about John, his life with dogs and his run to Nome. I also predict that there will be a more recent picture of John and Iditarod Trail Boss, Mark Nordman coming soon.

Allan Alexander Allan was born in Dundee, Scotland in 1867. The boy became known as Scotty. Growing up, he loved to work with animals. At the very young age of 12, he began vocational training on how to train horses. At the age of 19, he accompanied a beautiful Clydesdale Stallion on a voyage across the Atlantic Ocean and then to a ranch in South Dakota. Once in American, Scotty headed to the west coast where 10 years later, news of gold in the Klondike lured him to the far north.

Like many young men, Scotty left his wife and two, soon to be three children behind with the promise of returning rich or sending for them when he was settled. He didn’t strike it rich in the Klondike. He earned his wages as a teamster, moving supplies over the dangerous trails to the mining camps, first with teams of horses and then by dog team. He became well known in the Dawson area as a top notch dog driver.

News of abundant gold in Nome prompted Scotty to travel the frozen Yukon River, a distance of over 1,200 miles, with his dog team lead by Dubby. Get a map out and compare this trek to the Iditarod race. Scotty didn’t strike it rich prospecting for gold in Nome either so he took a job in a hardware store and focused on training dogs. once settled, he brought his wife and family to Nome.

Nome Kennel Club Patch on Handler's Anorak

In 1907, dog drivers in Nome banded together to form the Nome Kennel Club. The purpose of the organization was to improve the care and breeding of sled dogs. The club sponsored the All Alaska Sweepstakes running from Nome to Candle, a distance of a little more than 400 miles. In the mean time, Scotty acquired Baldy. With Baldy in lead, Scotty placed in the top three a total of eight times – with three victories.

After WWI broke out, Scotty was contacted by the French Military to train drivers and 450 dogs for transporting supplies and wounded soldiers in the mountains between Germany and France. The dogs became famous around the world and many received medals of valor.

Scotty was elected to the Alaska Territorial Legislature and served terms in 1917 and 1919. He and his family moved back to California prior to the 1925 Diphtheria Epidemic. Seeking the best dog trainer, Admiral Richard Byrd sought out Scotty to train the dogs for Byrd’s 1928 Antarctica Expedition.

Scotty, the most famous musher of his time once said, “Dogs are the most intuitive creatures alive. They take the disposition of their driver. That is why I never let my dogs know that I am tired. At the end of the day…, I sing to the little chaps and whistle so they always reach the end of the trail with their tails up and waving.” Murphy and Haigh, share these words in Gold Rush Dogs. Handler says that Iditarod mushers follow his advice today.

Check the Internet for more information on that – who was the winner, what was the purse, what was the route, how long did it take, are the rules different than Iditarod? When Handler was in Nome, she ran in the 3 Dog – 3 Mile Business Man’s Race (open to men and women amateurs) sponsored by the Nome Kennel Club using dogs and a sled provided by club member, Dempsey Woods.

Hello Boys and Girls!

We now have 65 mushers who have signed up to run this year’s race! Isn’t that exciting? Have you taken a look at the musher listing on the website? When you do, you’ll be able to notice that we have mushers not only from the United States, but Canada, United Kingdom, Italy, and Jamaica. Isn’t that amazing? Get out a world map and locate those places, Boys and Girls.

Did you know that when you click on the name of a musher, you get to read about the musher? Reading about each musher is a great way to learn about the mushers and their teams. As you read, you’ll notice that some mushers have their own websites, too. If your teacher says it is ok, visit the musher websites. It’s lots of fun to read about mushers!

By the way, I thought you’d like to know that I was just hiking through the Iditarod Headquarters building and my ears perked up because I heard talk that even more mushers are expected to be signing up. So this is your behind the scenes information, watch that musher listing and see who else signs up. Mushers have until November 30, 2009 to sign up. You can read all about the musher’s rules by clicking here.

Well Boys and Girls, I think I’ll take another hike and see what else I can learn today! Hike and learn! Hike and learn! Hike and learn! Great plan, don’t you think?

The months of June, July, and August were a mixture of busy days and lazy days. Summer in Alaska is a beautiful time. All of the daylight hours give everyone plenty of time to be outside. When I wasn’t walking around the neighborhood, I enjoyed chewing on my favorite toys while in the shade beneath the trees in the yard. I breathed in he smells of salmon, steak, shrimp, potatoes, and other goodies being grilled in the evenings. I couldn’t resist sitting next to the table at meal time, hopeful of something delicious being handed to me beneath the table. I also enjoyed taking long afternoon snoozes and dreaming about the fun times I’ve had with my family and friends. I went camping and fishing a couple of times, too. Riding in a boat is lots of fun but I have to tell you my favorite part of camping has always been the time around the campfire watching my humans roast marshmallows. Getting that marshmallow roasted just right is such an art but my humans are pretty good at it. We had a great 4th of July holiday, too. I must admit that the sounds of firecrackers going off are too noisy for me. I covered my ears with my paws until all the noise was gone. Best of all this summer, I enjoyed spending time with all of my humans. We even took time to look at some old family pictures. We talked about the times when we were all a lot younger. All that talk about the past and our time together made this the best summer ever. You just can’t beat spending time with family and friends! I am grateful for my loving family and will always be with them, even in my dreams.

I bet you did some of the same things I did this summer. I’m sure as many teachers do, your teachers had your write in your journal about your summer. I know that is something you probably have to do every single school year, but writing about your experiences is a good thing. One idea is to save your journal entry and look back at it ten or twenty years from now. What fun it will be for you to remember what you did!

No matter where you are now, September is almost over and October will be here soon. Your September and mine may look and feel different. Here in Alaska, ‘Termination Dust’ is on the mountains. Leaves have turned golden. There is a crisp feel to the evenings and mornings. I know this because as I walk through the park near my home, my paws feel the crispness in the grass. My nose breathes in the coolness and I know that winter will soon be all around me. In some places in Alaska, a tiny bit of snow has already fallen. Take a moment and look around your world and jot down some notes about what you notice in nature. What hints is Mother Nature giving you about your season? In 30 days, observe again. Take notes and compare how things have changed.

Most of you are probably back in school and working hard on your assignments. Some of you are in a year round school and have holidays and vacations at different times. I live in Alaska in the northern hemisphere, but some of you live in the southern hemisphere and are moving into spring and looking forward to summer. No matter where you are, though, it is time to start to think about the 2010 Iditarod! This will be the best race ever and you aren’t going to want to miss a bit of it!

At the June 27th Volunteer Picnic and Musher Sign up, those mushers wanting to race in the next Iditarod began to turn in their registration materials declaring that the rest of their summer and the months leading up to the race, would be filled with training their dog team for the race. As of today, 63 mushers have signed up to run the race. Take a look at the musher listing and see who has signed up. Check back often to keep up with the sign up news because I’ve heard rumors a few more mushers will sign up soon.

I am sure you have ideas on things kids can do in their own communities to help out. Talk to your teachers and get involved in this project. You can learn more about this challenge by reading this article.

Boys and Girls, I know that you are going to have a great school year. As you practice your skills and learn new things in school, keep checking Zuma’s Paw Prints and Iditarod’s website for interesting information about Iditarod and Alaska.

Do you know of any dogs that have gotten injured during the race? Were they able to finish?

How many days does it typically take to finish the race?

Zuma, what temperature is it typically during the race week?

Zuma, can you please share a little more information with us about the Husky breed? Why do Huskies look like wolves? Also, why do some Huskies have blue eyes? Thank you for your time.

Your Montclaire Elementary Friends

Hello Boys and Girls,

Thanks for your questions!

When a musher’s team arrives at a checkpoint the team of veterinarians examines each of the dogs. If there are any dogs that need to be dropped from the race, the veterinarians care for those dogs. Those dogs are later flown back to Anchorage. Sometimes a rest in a checkpoint is all a dog needs to be feeling great again. Do you ever come in from recess all tired out but find out when the next recess rolls around you are ready to out and play again? Or have you ever had an upset tummy and then after a nap, you feel better? Well, it is sort of like that for some of the dogs. Once a dog has been dropped from the race and left with the veterinarians at the checkpoint, though, that dog doesn’t get to get back in the Iditarod— at least that particular year.

The winner finishes the race in 9 – 10 days. Mushers roll into Nome one after another until they are all there! Usually most of the mushers finish by 14 days.

It is hard to talk about the typical weather because weather conditions are different from one part of the trail to the next part of the trail. The conditions can be different one year from the next or from one checkpoint compared to three checkpoints up the trail. It is best for you to visit our weather center at the website during the race and click on the temperatures at the different checkpoints. You can also use the GPS Tracker to see the temperature each musher faces during the race. We also have some really awesome weather activities and lessons at the website. You can see those ideas at this section of the website by click here. Then click on the Iditarod Ready! Storm Read! materials.

I could write a whole book about the Husky breed. I’ll tell you one thing— they are a northern breed which means they have a suitable natural winter coat to keep them warm. You can go to this part of the website and learn more about the dogs. To read, click here. Click on What is a Sled Dog? Our Chief Veterinarian wrote that article and it will help you learn a lot of important information. Your teacher can read it and help you learn more.

As far as eye color, I’m not so sure so many have blue eyes. You might be thinking of Siberian Huskies. A good place for you to look is at the Race Images by photographer Jeff Schultz. Go to www.iditarod.com and click ‘View All Images’. You can also check out our Zuma Blog scrapbook. On the left side of this page, click on the Scrapbook of Pictures. Look at the pictures of the dogs on the website pages, too. I think you see that most huskies don’t have blue eyes. Have fun looking at the pictures.

Thanks for your questions.

Have a great week in school! I hope you keep reading Zuma’s Paw Prints all summer long!

Lots of Tail Wags,

I hope you take time to learn more about me and to learn about the other K9 Journalists. You can find places to click to learn more on the left side of this page. Click right where it says, Meet and Learn About the K9 Reporters.

Zuma

Dear Zuma,

We are writing to you from Franklinton, Louisiana. We are in Miss Haynes’ 2nd grade class. There are 24 of us students in her room. We are reading the story “Akiak: A Tale from the Iditarod” in our reading book at school. We found your website and decided to write and ask you some questions as journalists ourselves. Here we go:

1. Have you ever had frostbite? -Jayonne

I have not. My fur coat keeps me warm. I sometimes wear booties on my feet to keep the little bits of snow and ice from hurting my paws. I stay safe and warm.

2. Who are your best friends? -Mackenzie

My best friends are Gypsy, Libby, and Sanka

5. Have you ever had to be brave before? -Caitlyn

It takes bravery to set goals and work towards them, no matter what your goals may be, so considering that, I’m brave every day! How about you?

6. What is your favorite chew toy? -Miguel

I like all of my chew toys but I guess I especially like my squeaky duck. Oh, and then there is my squeaky fish….

7. Have you ever raced in the Iditarod? -Terion

I am not a racer. I am a reporter.

8. When was your first Iditarod and did you win? -Emily

It took a lot of practice to learn to type. I went to K9 Journalism school but learning to type just took practice but it works a lot better than holding a pencil between my paws!

12. How old were you whenever you started to type? -Colby

I started to type when I was a small pup, just like most humans start to write when they are in preschool or even before that!

15. Will you ever come to Louisiana, maybe Franklinton, where we live? -Mason

19. Have you ever been trained for the Iditarod? -Leyton

I live in Wasilla.

21. Were you ever in a blizzard? -Camryn

I try to be in as many blizzards as I can. I love the cold, the wind, and all of the falling snow! I can’t wait for the next blizzard. Of course, boys and girls, I am all dressed for winter weather and I know how to stay safe!

24. Have you ever been to a human school where children go to school? -Zahila

I sometimes get to visit students in school. That is a lot of fun.
